Summer of Solutions Oakland 2011 is a fellowship program to support young leaders, ages 16-30, to work together with the community for 8 weeks this summer to create self-sustaining, environmental, social justice, and economic solutions.

Oakland is a thriving community, with a deep history of political and social justice, and a rich network of active organizations taking bold action to create a peaceful, just, sustainable world that works for all.

Summer of Solutions fellows will get their hands dirty this summer supporting local organizations to create solutions and show the world what’s possible.

Location: Oakland, California

Deadline: To be filled immediately

Type of Position: Full – Time (40 hours/week) / Part – time (10-20 hours/week)

Program Dates: June 17th – August 12, 2011

Benefits: $1000 stipend. Housing, food, and travel stipends available based on need.

for entering Kindergartners

Independent Sector is pleased to announce nominations are now open for the American Express NGen Leadership Award.

The award honors one accomplished nonprofit
leader age 40 or under who has already demonstrated significant impact in addressing society’s critical needs.

By recognizing the contributions of one transformative leader, this award raises the
national profile and visibility of diverse leaders across the nonprofit and philanthropic community.

Nominations will be accepted through Friday,
May 13. Self-nomination is not admissible. 

To be eligible for the award, the nonprofit professional must be employed by a U.S.-based nonprofit or non-governmental organization and demonstrate transformative impact in his or her field.  The leader should display a proven ability to collaborate in innovative, inclusive ways, and identify needs, generate solutions and assess progress toward goals. 

Nominations will be evaluated by a selection committee of nonprofit and philanthropic professionals. Six finalists will be asked to submit answers to brief questions and their responses will serve as thebasis for the committee’s final selection.

The finalists will be featured in a virtual Leadership Forum with the NGen community on July 13 to discuss issues pressing to young leaders and the nonprofit community as a whole.

The recipient of the American Express NGen Leadership Award will be announced in late July, and will be recognized during the Independent Sector Annual Conference in Chicago, October 30-November 1.

This award extends Independent Sector’s commitment to and support of emerging leaders. Among IS signature programs is NGen: Moving Nonprofit Leaders from Next to Now, a special series of leadership development and networking sessions for nonprofit professionals taking place each year at the IS conference.  NGen has expanded to include the American Express NGen Fellows program, which provides an accomplished and diverse group of 12 emerging leaders with exceptional opportunities to hone their leadership skills, strengthen their professional networks, and develop a collaborative project focused on issues important to young leaders.
